Defamation

Today we see people gossiping about others, making comments, passing untrue stories and enjoying it all the same at the expense of other people’s expense, ruining their reputation sometimes ruining their life –social and economical.

We hardly realize that we too encourage this behavior in some way or the other. But this is a criminal offense with punishment.

According to section 499 whoever, by words either spoken or intended to be read, or by signs or by visible representations, makes or publishes any imputation concerning any person intending to harm, or knowing that such imputation will harm, the reputation of such person, is said, to defame that person.

Section 500 deals with punishment for defamation. Whoever defames another shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both. So next time you want to take part in some juicy gossip or is a victim of someone’s crude story telling remember Section 499 and 500 of IPC.
